The ASVO has played an important role in the development of Best Practice Recommendations (BPR) for the Australian wine show system. In 2004 it published recommendations for Wine Shows, developed by an industry based ASVO Wine Show Committee, to act as guidelines for Australian wine shows to assist them in their objectives of improving and promoting the wine quality and style offering of the Australian Wine industry.
Ten years on, the ASVO and the wider wine industry believes it is time to review and update these recommendations as well as consider issues not addressed in the 2004 review. Thus the ASVO has again established an industry based Wine Show Technical Advisory Group (TAG), with members drawn from the wider industry, to review, revise and update the BPRs.
Dr Tony Jordan has accepted the ASVO invitation to Chair the TAG. He brings considerable judging, committee and exhibitor experience to the position. The ASVO has also nominated Board Member Dr Anthony Robinson to act as the secretary to the TAG. He has a particular interest and many years of involvement in the Australian Wine Show system.
The objective is to develop a single document that expresses current industry views on what constitutes best practice in the Australian Wine Show system including guidelines and recommendations.
Members of the TAG have been chosen to represent a wide range of industry interests including large and small companies, a wide range of regional origins, trade, press, links to wine show committees and links to the 2004 ASVO committee.
Wine Show Technical Advisory Group
Chair- Tony Jordan – Oenotec Pty Ltd, Victoria
Tony re-established Oenotec Pty Ltd in 2008 where he consults on winemaking, viticulture and wine business and currently has clients in Australia, New Zealand, Europe, China and India. In 1987 he joined the Moet Hennessy group as Managing Director / Winemaker at Domaine Chandon Australia, a role that expanded to consulting winemaker to the Chandon wineries worldwide in the 1990’s. In 2003 he was appointed as CEO of Domaine Chandon Australia, Cape Mentelle and Cloudy Bay NZ. Over the last 30 years he has judged at all capital city and most regional wine shows in Australia as well shows in as the UK, South Africa, Hong Kong and New Zealand. He has chaired the Royal Hobart Wine Show, the Perth Royal Wine Show and the Hong Kong International Wine Competition. Tony is a past President of the ASVO.
Sue Bell – Bellwether Wine, South Australia
Sue is the Winemaker and Director of Bellwether, a small brand based in Coonawarra, making Coonawarra Cabernet, Tasmanian Chardonnay and other wines from Wrattonbully, Heathcote and the Riverland. Sue was part of the original ASVO wine show committee, she is active judge in the Australian wine show circuit at both regional and capital city shows and judged overseas. Sue started the Limestone Coast wine show and is a past chair of the Limestone Coast Grape and wine Council. Sue supports the training of future wine show judges via the AWRI AWAC course.
Kim Bickley – Fine Wine Partners, New South Wales
Recently employed with Fine Wine Partners as the Business Manager for Fine Wine and Education, Kim has more than 15 years across the industry. Previously, Kim managed the wine program for Hilton Hotels as Executive Sommelier in Sydney and Surfers Paradise. More recently she was the Head Sommelier at the Star Casino’s with a 1000 listing strong wine list at Black by ezard. Kim continues to keep her passion for Sommeliers as a committee member of Sommeliers Australia. Since completing the Len Evans tutorial in 2008, Kim has judged National wine shows including Brisbane and Sydney as well as many regional shows such as Margaret River, Clare and Orange, to name a few.
Nick Bulleid M.W. – Consultant, Australian Capital Territory
Nick is an independent wine industry consultant, providing assistance with winemaking, blending, quality assessment and valuation and marketing. He has worked with grape-grower and winemaking organisations to assist them in improving their wine production and marketing methods. Nick became the third Master of Wine in Australia, passing the examination at first attempt in 1992. He has judged at most capital city wine shows in Australia and New Zealand, many regional shows and the International Wine Challenge, London. He chaired the New South Wales Wine Awards from 2001 to 2003, the Qantas Wine Show of Western Australia from 2011 to 2013 and currently chairs the Victorian Wines Show.
Tom Carson – Yabby Lake Vineyard, Victoria
Tom is a Victorian based winemaker for Yabby Lake and Heathcote Estate. Tom is the current Chairman of the Royal Melbourne Wine Awards and previous Chairman of the National Wine Show of Australia. Tom has been judging for over 12 years in Australia and internationally. Tom is currently on the committee of both Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula wine show.
P-J Charteris – Charteris Wines, New South Wales
Born and raised in the Waikato, New Zealand P-J Charteris has survived the vicissitudes of nearly 30 years in the wine industry to settle on a Trans-Tasman lifestyle of vinous extremes. P-J is based in the Hunter Valley, NSW where he makes Shiraz and Semillon while commuting to Central Otago, NZ to make fine Pinot Noir and Riesling under his own label, Charteris. P-J has been involved in the Australian Wine Show system since his first Associate judge position at the Royal Adelaide Wine Show in 1994. He is now the chairman of Judges at Royal Queensland and Hunter Valley Wine Shows as well as New South Wales Wine Awards. When he is not in the vineyard, winery or at the tasting bench you can find him laying at the bottom of a ruck on the rugby field, surfing or farming children, he has a herd of two.
Jim Chatto – McWilliam’s Wines, New South Wales
Jim is Chief winemaker for McWilliam’s Wines, responsible for the winemaking and stylistic direction across The McWilliams portfolio. Including: Mount Pleasant (Hunter Valley) Brand’s Laira (Coonawarra) Evans & Tate (Margaret River) McWilliam’s Hanwood Estate (Griffith) & Barwang (Hilltops). In 2009 Jim was named ‘Hunter Valley Winemaker of the Year’, and in 2010 was a ‘Gourmet Traveller Winemaker of the Year’ finalist. Jim is a senior wine show judge with over fifteen years’ experience across both regional and capital city shows. Jim has been Chairman of Judges at the Hunter Valley Wine Show (2012-2014) and the McLaren Vale Wine Show from 2014.
Sam Connew – Stargazer, Tasmania
Sam has previously worked as the Winemaker / Manager at Tower Estate in the Hunter Valley and Senior Winemaker at Wirra Wirra in McLaren Vale. More recently she has worked in applied research for the AWRI as Manager of the Hunter Valley Node and has launched her first solo project, Stargazer, in 2013. Sam has extensive judging experience having been a Panel Chair at many regional and capital city wine shows, and most recently appointed Chairman of Judges at the Sydney Royal Wine Show. She was an ASVO board member from 2011 – 2013 and has also completed the AWRI Advanced Wine Assessment Course and the Len Evans Tutorial.
Chris Crawford – Crown Melbourne Limited, Victoria
Chris Crawford is a Sommeliers Australian committee member, and sub-committee member for education, where he is heavily involved in establishing & tutoring the Sommeliers Australia Education Program. He is also a Judge at various regional and state wine shows, as well as a committee member for the Royal Melbourne Wine Show and a certified Sommelier through the Court of Master Sommeliers (UK & USA). With roles as the Wine Buyer for The Prince Hospitality Group, and the Lucas Group he is now the General Manager of Beverage for Crown Casino overseeing all aspects of the Melbourne operation.
Jeremy Dineen – Josef Chromy Wines, Tasmania
Jeremy Dineen is Chief Winemaker and General Manager at Josef Chromy Wines in Tasmania. He has over 10 years’ experience judging at regional, national and international wine shows within Australia. Jeremy has served as a Panel Chair at several capital city and regional wine shows and Chairman of Show for the Macedon Ranges Wine Show.
Andrew Hardy – Petaluma, South Australia
Andrew is currently the Senior Winemaker / Brand Ambassador at Petaluma. He commenced at Petaluma in November 1982 after studying Oenology at Wagga Wagga and Roseworthy. He has been Chief Winemaker and Viticulturist for Petaluma from 1988-1996, looking after all winemaking and viticulture from Petaluma’s three regions, Clare, Coonawarra and Adelaide Hills. He was then transferred to Tim Knappstein Wines in Clare, only to return to Petaluma in October 2004. Andrew was Chairman of the Clare Valley Winemakers from 1999-2001. He is a member of the Wine Committee from 2001, and the Chairman since 2011, at the Royal Adelaide Wine Show. He has been a Board Member of R.A.& H.S. from August 2010, has judged at various wine competitions across Australia, and completed first AWRI Advanced Wine Assessment Course in 1992.
Tony Robinson – Treasury Wine Estates, South Australia
Tony is based in South Australia working as a winemaker at the Wolf Blass winery in the Barossa Valley. Tony completed a degree in Viticulture and Oenology in 2003 and a PhD in wine sensory science and analytical chemistry in 2010. He has participated on committees for the WA Wine Industry Association, WFA, and currently sits on the ASVO Board. He has been involved with wine shows in both organisational and judging roles over the last twelve years having experience at regional, national, and international wine shows in Australia and the United States. Tony has also previously served on wine show committees in Perth and Margaret River and has recently completed the AWRI Advanced Wine Assessment Course in 2014.
Tyson Stelzer – Wine Press, Queensland
Tyson Stelzer is a wine writer, television presenter and author of 14 wine books. He was named The Australian Wine Communicator of the Year 2013 and The International Champagne Writer of the Year 2011. He is a regular judge and chairman at wine shows throughout Australia and is a co-creator with UK wine writer Matthew Jukes of The Great Australian Red Competition. Tyson is a regular contributor to 15 magazines including Wine Spectator, Decanter, Qantas The Australian Way and Australian Gourmet Traveller Wine. He contributes reviews to the James Halliday Australian Wine Companion and is a contributor to Jancis Robinson’s The Oxford Companion to Wine. Tyson is a consultant to Qantas Airways First Class and Business Class champagne selection. As an international speaker, he has presented at wine conferences in the UK, Japan, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia.
Edward Tomlinson – Lenton Brae Wines, Western Australia
Edward Tomlinson graduated with a degree in Oenology from Roseworthy Agricultural College in 1992. He returned to his family vineyard and winery Lenton Brae in 1995 after vintage experiences in New Zealand, California and South Africa. Although his roots are firmly embedded in Margaret River, Ed has judged at a number of shows across Australia including Sydney, Adelaide, Hobart, and Perth. He attended the second Len Evans Tutorial in 2002 and is the current chairman of the Margaret River Wine Show Committee.
Courtney Treacher – Houghton Wines, Western Australia
Courtney is based at the Houghton Nannup Winery. Winemaker since 2007, Courtney is responsible for the production of Brookland Valley wines. Courtney studied viticulture and Oenology at Curtin University graduating in 2003. Courtney completed the AWRI’s Advanced Wine Assessment Course in 2007 and has previously been on judging panels at a number of Western Australian regional shows and the Perth, Melbourne and Adelaide Royal Wine Shows. In 2011 Courtney had the great fortune of being selected as one of the Len Evans Tutorial scholars.
