Postgraduate research opportunities

Generous postgraduate research opportunities are currently available to join the Australian Research Council (ARC) Training Centre for Innovative Wine Production.

These projects offer a unique opportunity to work on industry-linked projects with leading grape and wine researchers and wine industry partners. All projects include an industry placement component.

The positions will be based at either the School of Agriculture, Food & Wine at The University of Adelaide (UA – Waite campus) or The National Wine and Grape Industry Centre at Charles Sturt University (CSU – Wagga Wagga, NSW).

Available projects span the grape and wine production chain

  • Inter-vine signalling via plant volatiles (UA)
  • Genetic basis of salt exclusion in grapevine (UA)
  • Rapid assessment of grapes prior to harvest to quantify fungal off-flavours and product composition (CSU)
  • Alternatives to sulfur dioxide for controlling Brettanomyces spoilage in wine (UA)
  • The impact of light on oxidative and reductive aging of wine (CSU)
  • Defining and exploiting the indigenous microflora of grapes (UA)
  • Efficient red winemaking by monitoring extraction and evolution of colour and polyphenols (UA – Masters position)
  • Membrane filtration technologies for efficient wine processing and recovery of valuable extracts (UA)

Information on available projects can be found on the join us page of the ARC TC-IWP website along with eligibility, stipend and application information.  We encourage anyone interested in specific project(s) to get in touch with the listed project supervisor to express their interest and discuss the project in more detail before applying.

Applications are open to suitably qualified Australian domestic and international students.  Successful applicants will receive an indicative stipend of $32,302 per annum as set by the ARC for three years (PhD) or two years (MPhil) as well as generous project operating funds.

Applications will remain open until all projects are filled

The ARC Training Centre for Innovative Wine Production is funded by the Australian Government through the Australian Research Council (IC170100008) with additional support from Wine Australia and industry partners
