Fortified Winemaking Workshop -Sherry, Australian Fortified Styles, and Port

Peter Godden - Vice President of ASVO and Group Manager, Industry Applications at AWRI, has released some more details about the forthcoming Fortified Winemaking workshops to be held in Melbourne on 3rd and 4th December.

The first session will focus on Sherry, and will be introduced by journalist Tim White, who has extensive experience with Sherry, and has visited the region on a number of occasions.

This session will feature César Saldaña, Director General of the Consejo Regulador for the DOC Jerez. César will discuss the technology of Sherry production, illustrated by a series of tastings of young and old sherries including base wines, supplied fresh from Spain. Refreshments will include Tapas from MoVida restaurant.

The second session will explore Australian fortified styles and will be lead by Colin Campbell of Campbells Wine in Rutherglen.

Colin will be joined by other Rutherglen producers to discuss their winemaking technologies and present tatstings covering new to very old and rare wines. James Talijancich from the Swan Valley will discuss his company's shift to become a dedicated fortified wine business, and will present some Pedro Ximénez wines from his current base wine through to old wines made by previous generations of his family.

The third session will examine the production of tawny and vintage port, and will be led by leading Portuguese winemaker David Fonseca Guimaraens, Winemaker and Technical Director for The Fladgate Partnership, family company that owns the Taylor Fladgate, Fonseca and Croft Port Houses in Portugal.

Four brackets supplied direct from Portugal will be tasted in this session. The first will be of fortifying spirits at 77% v/v; the second will be of Tawny Ports of differing ages; the third will be mature vintage Ports, and; the fourth will examine wines from the classic 2007 vintage.


The session will feature a leading Portuguse wine producer, and tastings will include predominantly Portuguese tawny and vintage wines, with some local wines included for comparison.
